Your Tyres are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road – and yet, many drivers don’t pay attention to them until something goes wrong. Knowing the early signs of Tyre wear can help you stay safe and avoid costly repairs (or worse, an accident).
At QuickFit Mobile Tyres, we’re all about making Tyre safety easy and convenient. Here are five warning signs that it might be time to replace your Tyres.
1. Tread Depth is Too Low
In Australia, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm – but waiting that long can compromise your safety, especially in wet weather. We recommend changing your Tyres when tread depth drops to 3mm to maintain proper grip and braking performance.
Quick tip:
Use the built-in tread wear indicators or try the 20-cent coin test – if the tread doesn’t reach the bill of the platypus, it’s time for a replacement.
2. Cracks or Bulges in the Sidewall
Cracks, splits, or bulges on the side of your Tyre are serious warning signs. They may be caused by age, under-inflation, kerb damage, or hitting potholes. A bulge, in particular, means the Tyre structure has been compromised and could blow out while driving.
If you spot anything unusual, it’s best to have it checked immediately.
3. Vibration or Thumping While Driving
If your steering wheel is shaking or your car is thumping as you drive, your Tyres might be unbalanced, worn unevenly, or suffering from internal damage. These issues affect not only comfort but also handling and fuel efficiency.
Our mobile Tyre technicians can inspect and rebalance your Tyres on the spot – no need to visit a workshop.
4. Tyres Are Over 5 Years Old
Even if your Tyres look fine on the outside, rubber degrades over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing Tyres every 5 to 6 years, regardless of how many kilometres you’ve driven.
You can check the age by reading the DOT code stamped on the Tyre’s sidewall. Don’t know how? No worries – we’ll check it for you during a routine Tyre check.
5. Poor Braking or Handling
Noticed your car is taking longer to stop? Struggling with grip around corners? These are classic signs your Tyres have lost traction.
Worn or ageing Tyres reduce braking performance and increase stopping distance – especially in the wet – putting you and your passengers at risk.
